Sometimes the band would get good scores.

Anyway, I'm glad we're doing Phantom because I've always wanted to do that show.

if you're good at it, you're gonna score good, and you're gonna win, simple as that

It depends on the judges. A band might get high marks at one competition,, and go to a different festival the next week and get lower ratings, simply because a judge or judges doesn't like a particular theme or songs..

here's what they should do
have a classical band that only play's classical music
and have a more upbeat band that only play's upbeat music

If you go to State Marching Festival, Chilhowie, or any other festival like that, they will probably give you a better score if you play more classical music.

just don't understand that, i mean if you're good you're good, judges should score you on that basis IMO...

Seems like some folks are looking for more of a "generic pep band" thing than serious music education.
(No offense meant to the pep bands either, though. I've been there and done that too)

These kids aren't being paid to entertain. They're in school to learn.

If all they get to experience is just basic crowd entertainment, no one would ever be prepared for music at the college level.

knight67, Speaking hypothetically, say you judged a competition. There are 2 AAAA bands. Say one played a 60s show. Easy music and drill. They execute it pretty good. Say the other band played Phantom of the Opera. They were able to play it real quick and the drill was tough. But they executed it really well. What would be your decision?

i'd need more details on what kind of 60's show you're talkin about, remember, i'm not a band enthusiast!

what im saying is regardless of song, if the band does good, plays good and marches good, very well executution all over, id still say the judges should name the winner regardless of music selection

i think i get what dj is sayin. like which is easier to play "mary had a little lamb" or "enter sandman"? both of those on guitar. i personally think if this is the case they should split up the band comp. into classification. i dont know music, never played an instrument but the flute in 1st-3rd grade with ms. wood.

also in reply to elp6n, the band is to entertain and also learn. there is a call called marching band and somethin else. but they do play during the halftime of football. if they wasnt to entertain then y would they plat at halftime?
